Iconic Brands That No Longer Exist

Posted by Josh

Compaq

A name that will lie in tech infamy, Compaq was once the biggest producer and seller of computers in the world in the 90s. Compaq was the first company to re-engineer the IBM PC, relaunching it as the ‘Compaq Portable’.

However, the arrival of Dell with competitively priced products that were seemingly higher quality spelt doom for Compaq. A 1998 merger with DEC is considered one of the worst tech mergers and history, and a massive failure with a chip launch that cost billions in R&D was the final nail in the coffin for Compaq. They were sold off to HP for $25 billion and sequestered to several budget models, before fading from existence in 2013.
