Facts We May Not Know About Chernobyl Disaster
The Red Forest
The Wormwood Forest used to surround the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Now, it is known as “The Red Forest” and it spans 4 square-miles around the site. Its name comes from the color of the pine trees that make up the forest. After absorbing all the radiation from the explosion, they died and gained a reddish-brown hue that was “ginger” in color.

Most of the forest was bulldozed and thrown into waste graveyards. We’re just glad that it’s a forest that turned red and not a whole town.
