Due to widespread misinformation about the risks of the disaster and a fear that the radiation would cause their children a fate worse than death, an estimated 100,000-200,000 women aborted their wanted children following the months after the incident. Some of these procedures were done per the advice of their doctors, while others did so in spite of their doctors’ advice.

Whether or not their children were at risk, these mothers just wanted to spare their children from a life of agonizing tests and deformities.
