Facts We May Not Know About Chernobyl Disaster
Chernobyl’s Super Barrier
In 2004, the idea was proposed for a new containment building for the reactor. In 2010, work began to construct the new barrier, the New Safe Confinement structure. Completed in 2018, this new confinement system had to be built in two halves and slowly slid inch by inch over the building because it weighed more than the Eifel Tower and was taller than The Statue of Liberty.

This idea was also convenient as it allowed the workers to be in the vicinity of the reactor without getting too close to the building. It will conceal Chernobyl’s reactor for the next 100 years.
