Them: What does a day of sales have to do with Christmas?

You: A secular holiday that grew out of a religious one, now it’s the day following Christmas where people get good sales in stores and receive gifts from their employers. It started out of the Christian holiday commemorating the first Christian martyr, St. Stephen, who was stoned to death for believing in Jesus, and in Ireland the day is still known as St. Stephen Day.

Boxing Day

There is tons of debate on where this holiday got its name, ideas such as it’s a reference to holiday gifts, charity drives, a nautical tradition, but all we know for sure is that it has nothing to do with the sport of boxing.
