Following the pummeling that many major cities received in Europe during WWII, millions of Americans fled the urban sprawl, for slight less sprawling suburbia. This resulted in a dynamic shift in commerce. Brick and mortar retailers were no longer centralized in one place, and instead the dawn of the suburban mall began.

WWII Does What it Do

The first climate-controlled shopping center opened in 1956 in a Minneapolis suburb. In the next 30 years, hundreds of similar styled centers shot up across the US, many of them much bigger, and higher quality than the original.
