The History of Black Friday

Posted by Josh

How Did it Work?

Department stores during this time were much more than specialty stores. From jewelry, appliances, and home goods, to toys and various gifts for anyone. They were multi-story halls of commerce, and most shoppers could finish their whole list for the holidays in one store, or one or two specialty stores besides.

How Did it Work?

The day after Thanksgiving was naturally one of the best days to shop. Most people were still with their families after the meal, and very few were required to work. These stores were actually quite localized however, with Alabama having over 12 separate department store chains throughout the state, and each had their own after Thanksgiving sales. Black Friday was about shopping and deals before it even got the name.
