Some retailers are managing to adapt to the times. With smart ad campaigns, integration of e-commerce capabilities, and price-matching policies have allowed some companies to claw their way back into relevancy again. But the model simply isn’t sustainable. Even Macy’s in 2017 announced that it would close a number of its flagship department stores, many of which are over a century old.
