Elizabeth Holmes broke the media when she claimed to have developed a device that, using only a single drop of blood, could determine your risk for hundreds of conditions. Holmes’s star was on a meteoric rise. During 2014 she topped the Forbes’ list of the wealthiest self-made women.

But a secret 2015 investigation by the Wall Street Journal changed everything. It was revealed that the technology simply didn’t work, and saw Holmes’s worth drop to $0. The company recently received funding to keep it afloat, but it remains to be seen if they can repair the damage to public trust. Holmes was also indicted on conspiracy and wire fraud.
