Iconic Brands That No Longer Exist
Commodore
What once began as a simple typewriter repair and assembly business in 1954 would turn in time to a rival of Apple. Innovating to pocket calculators and home computers, the company’s iconic Commodore 64 was released in 1982 as a competitor to the Apple offering, selling for $595. Though this works out to $1600 in today’s terms, it was still half the price of the Apple II.

At the company’s best it was selling 2.5 million computers annually, but sales started to dip sharply towards the end of the 1980s, and after a massive failure with a game console, the company folded in 1994. It attempted to relaunch between 2010-2013, to no avail, and the company went the way of the dodo.
