The iconic toy store spanned 7 decades before finally calling it quits. First opening in DC in 1948, Toys R Us was extremely successful due to the baby boom and prosperity that categorized the US after the war. It would go on to become the premier toy store around the world, but modernizing had its cost.

The dawn of e-commerce actually helped the traditional brick-and-mortar store, with its 10-year partnership with Amazon as its exclusive toy retailer. But Amazon’s allowance of other brands, despite a successful lawsuit, was the beginning of the end for Toys R Us. Finance mismanagement and greedy investors were the final straw for this brand, and they were forced into bankruptcy in 2017.
