Funny Signs From Around The World
One of the great joys of traveling is coming across a mistranslated sign or a sign that has some cultural or local implication but is completely foreign to tourists. We can’t help but laugh at the poorly translated menu items, offering cooked mother-in-law or finger stew, or the warning side imploring us to “honk horn OK!” Then there are the people who use humor to pass on important information, or just to make us smile. These signs take the mundane and turn them into fun, making us giggle as we internalize the message. When we come across examples of such humor or hilarity, we can’t help but stop and take notice!
Things Are About To Get Loud
Ever dined at a Greek restaurant where they proudly warned you about plate-smashing shenanigans? Yes, they promised to make noise – not just with pans, but with their unique dance of culinary chaos. This sign promises that the cooks will scream, kick, yell, and break plates. Apparently, that’s normal while cooking Greek food!
Well, we all know that authenticity normally equals a great experience and tasty food. And who can argue with a restaurant that warns you to be prepared for the craziness that may come from this authenticity? Just as long as you watch out for the plates flying through the air, and try to avoid some of the kicking and screaming.
Better Not To Approach From The Back
Caution: Enter the Tapir Zone at Your Own Risk! Keep a solid 7-foot buffer or become an unintended shower target. Donning a natural water pistol, this Tapir’s impromptu ‘sprinkle shows’ are not to be missed – unless you’re the star! Keep your distance to stay dry and maintain your dignity. The thing that bothers us, though, is why leave the tapir with an open chain link fence- seems like it’s tempting our tapir friends to aim at us.
Umbrellas and raincoats won’t help here! Remember, maintaining a 7-foot moat keeps you safe from unexpected showers. Step into the splash-free zone and admire this cuddly guy’s impressive aim from afar. Your dry clothes and ego will thank you!
Well… That’s Just Mean
This establishment has requested that all Americans be accompanied by an adult. Haven’t all non-Americans rolled their eyes deep into their heads at some American naivete and undeserved bravado at some point? Still, we can’t help feeling that this sign is just a little mean. We hope that this is a joke, right?
What’s more, seeing as though this sign is outside of a pub in London, it makes us think about all of the childish behavior that can go on in such an establishment. With what we have experienced, let’s just say that if Americans need an adult to accompany them, then so do half of the pub-going Londoners!
Being An Adult Is Easy
This hilarious sign describes the ease with which you can be an adult- apparently, it’s easy, just pay bills, avoid meth, keep some friends, wear deodorant, and tip your bartenders. Seems so easy, it’s a wonder so many of us are struggling with it!
Well maybe, if we break it down, it isn’t actually all that easy! Let’s take that paying your bills for instance- not so simple. Now what about keeping a few close friends, coz that also demands more effort than some of us can afford to give. What we are really saying is that it may be a simple and funny sign, but we think that being an adult isn’t actually so easy! So what if we want to complain about it?
Best To Stay Away
Tired of germs, prejudice, and bad vibes? This sign says it all: “Welcome Masked Smiles, Good Vibes, and Common Sense. Symptoms of COVID, homophobia, and racism? Nah, we’re allergic to that nonsense! Let’s keep the air clean from both viruses and outdated beliefs. Step in if you’re a fan of fresh air and fresher perspectives.
We’ve got hand sanitizer for germs and a zero-tolerance policy for negativity. In this space, the only contagious thing is kindness, so leave the rest at the door. We love that the shop’s owners identify that the most dangerous diseases they can imagine are COVID-19 and prejudices! If only there was also a vaccine for bigotry, and hate!
Do Not Ignore The Warning
A whopping 3/4 of the British press is controlled by billionaires. This means that a small group of super-rich individuals have a big say in what news you read and how it’s presented. When news is influenced by only a few, diverse viewpoints can get squeezed out. This sign stealthily hides as a warning on a train, showing us that the threat of a non-independent press may be as much a hazard as any safety threat on a train.
It’s important to be aware of this so you can make informed decisions about the information you consume. Keep in mind that a range of perspectives helps you see the full picture. Stay curious, dig deeper, and don’t let a handful of wallets shape your view of the world.
Giving Back In Every Way You Can
This amazing Swedish bath house welcomes Ukrainian friends, inviting them to escape chilly tensions, soak, and smile. Offering free entrance for Ukrainian refugees, no politics, just poolitics as they are encouraged to swim their worries away. The sauna is cozier than a sheepskin coat, and the steam room’s steamier than a summer in Kyiv.
Leave your worries at the door – towels and free swimsuits are provided. So Kyiv your stress goodbye and let’s make some splashy memories together! This bathhouse really shows how anybody can make a difference by giving whatever they can and helping those in dire need. In this bathhouse, differences dissolve, leaving only the kinship of humanity. Välkommen!
The Town Where The Golden Arches Are Blue
In the heart of Arizona, there’s a town that takes its aesthetics seriously. With a mindful touch, the town requested its McDonald’s sign to trade its traditional colors for a soothing turquoise hue, aligning with the city’s alluring aesthetics. This thoughtful shift painted a new chapter, where golden arches gracefully merge with the desert landscape.
This harmonious gesture displays the city’s genuine affection for its identity, weaving fast-food familiarity into the vivid tapestry of its surroundings. We just hope that the burgers themselves have a normal color- turquoise may be interesting on the golden arches- but we think we would be a little worried if our patty had a sky-blue hue! This place is so cool, even the cacti are jealous. It’s a city where even fast food has a touch of desert dazzle!
Crazy Signs And The Reasons They Are Needed
In this Parisian pace, a little sign decided to make a big statement: “Remember, faces forward, superheroes! The wall won’t mind, but the floor might feel a bit unappreciated.” It seems some creative visitors were confusing urinals with abstract art, giving the poor tiles a modernist makeover. It’s also important to remember that the urinals are only for number 1s. Making us wonder who thought differently.
Even in the City of Light, artistic expression is best left to canvas and crayons. So, dear travelers, let’s direct those superpowers in the right direction and keep the urinals a splash-free zone dedicated to yellow and not to brown. After all, Picasso himself would agree – some masterpieces are best kept on canvas, not on the bathroom floor.
Dressing Up And Stealing Cars
Attention, dear gamblers! Before you hand over your keys to your valet remember his ‘unique’ style. Why? Because we don’t have a valet! Yes, you heard it right. No snazzy cars flying by here, just a cunning thief trying to hit the jackpot with your wheels. The only problem we see is that you’ll probably only read this sign after you’ve already handed off your keys to the well-dressed imposter.
Imagine the audacity! But hey, we’re all about innovation, right? So, make a mental sketch of Keep your keys, keep your wits, and let the real games begin inside. It’s Vegas, baby, where even the parking escapades deserve applause!
Braving The Winter
November adventurers, you’re true badasses! Welcome to Helsinki, where only the boldest souls brave the chilly winds and early sunsets. While others seek warmth, these travelers have chosen frosty fun! They surely must have ice in their veins? But fear not, for hearty strolls and sauna showdowns await.
Remember, anyone can visit in summer, but it takes a real badass to conquer November! These travelers obviously relish the bragging rights of experiencing Helsinki’s icy charm. They’re not just travelers; they’re frosty trailblazers! Well, we appreciate that the city has such a great self-awareness, understanding that anybody visiting in the winter has to be just a little bit of a badass.
A Day Without Wine…
In the heart of Amsterdam, this sign beams with cheeky charm. This whimsical proclamation tickles the fancy of passersby, capturing the city’s laid-back spirit. With a nod to the delightful unpredictability of life, the sign playfully acknowledges that wine might just be the secret ingredient to navigating the twists and turns.
It’s an invitation to embrace Amsterdam’s free-spirited vibe and savor the moments that come our way, whether they’re filled with merlot or mischief. So, as you wander the picturesque canals and cobblestone streets, let this sign be a reminder to toast to life’s adventures – with or without a glass of vino in hand.
Nine Horrible, Worthless, Baconless Years
Sure, veggies might live longer, but missing out on juicy steaks and sizzling bacon? Is that really living? Passersby chuckle at the witty banter while pondering the eternal question: Is a life without bacon truly a life well-lived? Is it worth living at all if you can’t enjoy a Steak? Whether you’re a carnivore or herbivore, this sign reminds us that humor sizzles when it’s seasoned with a touch of good-natured ribbing.
Dublin welcomes all palates to relish life’s flavors, each with its own special zest. After all, in this vibrant city, the only thing longer than a vegetarian’s lifespan is the laughter echoing from both sides of the dietary spectrum. Well, there’s that and Guinness!
Eat Cheesecake, Avoid Being Kidnapped
Cheesecake: Your Anti-Kidnapping Armor in Germany! Behold, the German Safety Strategy! It proudly declares, ‘Harder to Kidnap Heavy People – Eat Cheesecake, Foil Kidnappers!’ Ingenious, isn’t it? This sign serves as both a slice of humor and a slice of advice. The logic is simple: load up on creamy cheesecake, transform into an unmovable cheesecake-powered superhero, and watch kidnappers flee in confusion!
This eccentric piece of advice delivers more than a punchline – it promotes personal safety with a dollop of laughter. So, next time you’re in Germany, embrace the cheesecake shield. Remember, a well-fed belly might just be your ultimate defense against dastardly plans. Stay heavy, eat a ton of cake, stay safe!”
Do Not Feed The Children To The Animals
This sign at a Barcelona Zoo explains to people that they shouldn’t hold their children over the animal cages. The simple word “NO”, says to the visitors what we all should know instinctively. What makes us chuckle is the fact that the zoo definitely feels that it has to explain to people how to behave, it is clear that this sign has been prompted by some idiotic behavior.
We can’t help feeling even more sorry for the animals, who may have otherwise received a midafternoon snack once in a while. Humans can really be the stupidest animals in nature. No other species would dream of holding their young over a cage with a dangerous animal underneath- then again, no other species would have the forethought to leave this sign. “NO”
Ignore This And Snip Snip Snip
Attention all bladder-challenged adventurers! This tongue-in-cheek gem in Turkey playfully threatens those who relieve themselves here with a fate worse than soggy socks: the dreaded snipping of the family jewels. The sign suggests that while you can try and relieve yourself on the grass if caught, you will face a pair of scissors. OUCH!
The sign also jokingly implies that some egg-shaped appendages will be set free! While the sign’s threats might tickle our funny bone, we think that his threat is somewhat effective (and a little scary), even if it is only in jest. So, hold tight until you get to the facilities, and may your bladders and sense of humor remain intact!
Great Street Art Knows No Limitations
In the charming alleys of Florence, Italy, a delightful transformation has taken place. Once mundane street signs have undergone a whimsical metamorphosis, turning the city into an open-air gallery, and we can’t help but chuckle at their wit. Skillful artists have infused these signs with playful creativity, breathing life into the streets.
Using the stop signs as basic canvas’, these humorous street artists display incredible creativity and a sense of fun. This eccentric fusion of practicality, graffiti, humor, and artistry not only enhances mundane signs but also uplifts spirits. These animated signs prove that even the most ordinary elements can become extraordinary sources of joy and amusement.
Alcohol Aiding In Bad Decisions
Caution: Drinking alcohol may result in unexpected life changes! This witty sign in Thailand reminds you that indulging in spirits could lead to surprising consequences. Remember, alcohol and decision-making aren’t the best of friends, and that can result in some rather colorful life choices.
From befriending lamp posts to attempting impromptu moonwalks, it’s a journey of unpredictable hilarity. And oh, did we mention that alcohol can make you a little “loose”? Raunchy behavior might increase your chances of unwittingly crossing paths with Cupid, and making some massive mistakes (ever heard of ‘beer goggles’?). Cheers to laughter, unexpected life changes, and the art of blaming it all on the mischievous spirits in that bottle!
Enough With The Roaches
In Mexico, a clever sign playfully tackles the issue of littering cigarette butts. Positioned strategically to capture attention, the sign humorously suggests that discarded cigarette butts are giving cockroaches cancer. This creative twist serves as a lighthearted reminder for people to dispose of their cigarette waste responsibly.
By employing humor, the sign aims to nudge individuals to reconsider their actions and curb their habit of tossing cigarettes on the ground. This approach not only raises awareness about proper waste disposal but also underscores the power of humor in fostering positive change in public behavior. So why should the roaches have to scuttle around with tiny IV bags, when we can all do our part and not throw our roaches on the ground?
The Sign You’ve Been Looking For
This extremely helpful sign in China declares: You are here. And to be honest, it may be the most accurate and honest sign in the entire world. You are indeed here! Where is here? Where are you going? How do you get there? This sign answers none of these questions! It is more existentially profound than useful as a means of aiding the public (you know, the purpose of a sign), but we absolutely love it!
Imagine you are lost, searching for a sign and here you find it- and it tells you exactly what you need to know, “You are here.” We would feel so safe and reassured in the knowledge that no matter how lost we are- we are here! And you simply can’t argue with that.
There Are Exceptions To Every Rule
This sign in China lets us know that there is no smoking unless you are Batman, Eva, Sailor Moon, or an alpaca. And we are actually grateful to know that the owners of the establishment have considered all of their patrons’ needs in deciding to disallow smoking. We would all feel so uncomfortable knowing that alpacas are not allowed to smoke (or as the sign actually says: to Somke) there.
Say what you want for Batman and alpacas, they are simply better to be around after their cigarette. Truthfully, we love a humorous sign that also passes on a message effectively. The world needs more creative and funny people like this, almost as much as those alpacas need their nicotine fix.
All The Irish Delicacies
Sometimes you come across a picture or a sign that immediately lets you know where in the world you are, and how the people are in that place. Below is one such sign. The sign simply states that the soup of the day is Guinness. And between the lines, we know that the sign has to be in Ireland and that the people are hilarious and warm.
Guinness is shockingly very high in calories, so maybe it would hold its own as a soup! And anyway, who needs soup anyway, especially when you are in Ireland, and you have all the Guinness you can drink? To this sign, we say Sláinte!
Humorous Warnings On Dangerous Roads
These road signs in India warn people not to drink and drive and to be careful when rounding curves, but they do so in a gently funny way. The first declares that you should put fuel in your vehicle, but not put booze into yourself. A great message, delivered in a funny yet memorable way.
The signs appear to be written by the road itself and ask drivers to take care when navigating its bumps and steep turns. We think that as a general rule, you should always be gentle with all the curves you encounter, not only those on the road! Another great example of using humor to express a poignant message.
Signs That Say It All
This sign proudly displays its cheeky message to tourists. Don’t complain about our bad language if you don’t speak our language either, especially if you’re in our country. It’s an important reminder to guests who might want to complain.
But because the sign ends in such a friendly and warm-spirited way, the writer is forgiven and it’s understood to be just a bit of tomfoolery. No doubt that anybody who enters this establishment will know that the owners are up for a laugh and have a great sense of humor. An important reminder to tourists traveling anywhere in the world. It’s all about respecting other cultures and spreading love!
Making The Most Out Of An Uncomfortable Situation
This sign in Mexico makes light of a really unfortunate geopolitical situation in which the Former US President sowed a lot of resentment and mistrust by building a wall to stop illegal immigrants from Mexico. Keep calm everyone, it’s all lighthearted banter! By stating that the Mexican side is the fun side of the wall, the sign lets everyone know that the situation can be laughed at.
The humor here is probably used to both poke fun at the Americans, who aren’t as fun and who may be stressing that they are on the wrong side of the wall in Mexico, and to cope with the ridiculous nature of the wall! Good job Senor Frogs!
Double Standards!
This sign at a Bavarian bar states that men who aren’t wearing a shirt will be refused service, but women without a shirt will drink for free. The sign uses a little raunchy humor and a blatant double standard to make us laugh and put us in the mood for a wild night out.
Now we know that this may not be the most PG sign on the list, but really it’s just a bit of harmless fun, made to get patrons to have a laugh and drink more beer! While we suggest that people of all genders keep their clothes on, we hope that you all have a night as wild as this sign suggests you should!
Some People Just Can’t Get Into The Spirit
This very rude sign in Australia suggests that anyone who wants to trick-or-treat in Australia should go back to America. “This is Australia, not America”, you almost can’t read it without doing an Ozzy accent in your head! Despite its rather aggressive nature, the sign really makes us laugh. What could have been so annoying to the author that they felt compelled to write this sign for children to read?
It’s not that we condone the language in the sign, it’s just that we can’t believe anyone would use this type of sign for children! And anyway, you may be in Australia, and maybe halloween is not celebrated Down Under, but what harm do a couple of rugrats dressed as superheroes really pose to you?
Goose On the Loose
This very official-looking London Underground sign tells passengers that there is a “level 5 Goose Warning,” as a bird on platform 2 has claimed the entire platform for itself. We do not know what is funnier, the crazed goose chasing passengers away from the trains, or the fact that this has reached a “level 5” warning.
We wonder what levels 1 to 4 look like! To be fair, we have so many questions: What is the highest level warning for geese attacks? How dangerous is this bird? Why only Platform 2? Has the whole underground been rerouted because of this single goose on the loose?
That’s What The Sign Said
This hilarious Post-it note in Amsterdam makes fun of a note left outside of someone’s doorbell. The first note informs visitors to push hard until it makes a noise. Now that’s asking for a creative response for sure! Enter the classicly brilliant “that’s what she said ” joke. You can never go wrong.
We bet the postman and other passersby are grateful for this one. Now the writer gets to say the same joke an infinite amount of times, as new people see it and laugh! The perfect punchline, left permanently in place. It also makes us laugh to think of all the visitors pushing that bell hard, and thinking about the innuendo as they do so!
Lost in Translation
These hilarious shop names in Thailand show us how the Thai people market plus-sized clothing. The names are quite expressive. Maybe it’s a Google Translate fail that means something completely different in Thai? In the West, it is completely unacceptable to call anyone fat, and here we see entire shops using the term to sell their wares.
Either the Thai people have advanced to a place in which body shaming is no longer an issue, or they simply never knew how this would look for non-Thais! We realize that this is definitely a situation in which the intricacies of what is and isn’t acceptable is listed in cultural and linguistic translation, but we can’t help but laugh at these names.
