Antarctica’s ocean has a critical role in the global ecosystem. It acts as the world’s metaphorical lungs, as most of the oxygen in the deep water of the oceans starts its journey in the Antarctic waters.

And as the seawater freezes during the winter, it gives off leftover very salty and very cold water, that gets carried to all the oceans in the world, carrying oxygen that was dissolved from the surface, even at the bottom of the Marianas Trench 14,000 kilometers away. The Antarctic Ocean has some of the most oxygen-rich waters on planet Earth.
