‘The Midnight Zone’, the area of the ocean, at a depth deep enough that no light from the surface reaches the creatures here. And as the crew dropped into the midst of this landscape, as they shut off their lights, a whole world opened up before them.

Bioluminescent creatures innumerable in number and type appeared before their eyes, flashing blue light and exhibiting amazing evolutionary traits, such as various plankton and squid, which avoid predators by letting off flashes of light or bioluminescent ink.
