Them: Why do you go around to random people’s houses and sing?

You: Even though this tradition seems like it’s super ancient and antique, but actually showing up on people’s doorsteps to serenade them with seasonal tunes only started in the 19th century.

Caroling

The tradition was kind of there before- neighbors did visit each other to give out good wishes and cheer and the classic Christmas carols themselves do go back hundreds of years, but people didn’t go door-to-door to sing them. The mashup of the two ideas finally came together in Victorian England where caroling was a part of every holiday, but only became specific to Christmas when it became more commercialized.
