We all know the feeling of opening a magazine, turning on the television, or looking at social media and thinking, “Why are they wearing that?” On the other hand, we’ve all checked out a red carpet outfit or simply glanced at someone in public and thought, “That outfit is fabulous! When is it going to be a trend?” We have control over many things, but unless we’re celebrities we can’t control what’s in style.
We can argue over skinny jeans or bell bottoms all we like, but they aren’t going to magically appear on television, Instagram, or on the street unless the industry wants them to. Of course, we could just buck the trend and wear what we want. But it always feels better to have someone who agrees with our fashion choices.

BEST: Bell Bottoms And Flare Jeans
Sliding or shimmying our way into skinny jeans can be discouraging. Of course, long-legged models love them, but they aren’t for everyone. Bell bottoms were fun, but they are oh-so 70s. So who’s will be the first to raid their Mom’s closet in search of 70s threads? We’d like to volunteer.
Watching sitcoms from this decade, we can’t help but marvel at the flares, though we may worry about chasing a bus in them. Did people trip over bell bottoms when they were in style? Did they sweep the streets? Even if they had their downsides, ladies agree that they’re leagues better than the circulation-cutting skinny jeans we’ve seen on the rack.
WORST: Overlined Lips
Lining our features with makeup is nothing new. For example, we line our eyes under and over the eye to emphasize and elongate the shape. However, some have a habit of overdoing it with the lip liner and end up missing the point. Overlining lips constantly look like a poor editing job in photoshop.
The lines actually draw our attention to the natural lip shape inside, not the lined parts. The trendy lip shape is ever-changing, sometimes the cupid’s bow is defined, and sometimes it’s smoothed over. Either way, we’ll still be drawn to the line of your actual lips! Just once, let’s try to use this makeup product as intended.
WORST: Septum Piercings
People who don’t like piercings have had to make peace with this long-term trend for years if not decades. They may not mind a harmless nose ring, provided that it’s in the nostril. However, one thing that we can’t seem to get used to, even after all this time, is septum piercing.
This piercing has to be painful and we have to wonder if it’s worth it. Septum piercings don’t always look great, it makes many women think of bulls. Then there’s the question of having to clean it when you have a particularly bad cold. Some women are willing to rock this look, but most of us are going to have to pass.
BEST: The Jackie O Look
We may not have been born when Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was the model of style and elegance, but we can live vicariously through nostalgia. One of her most memorable styles seemed so simple–the headscarf and sunglasses combination. As simple as it was, it was simply beautiful on Jackie.
Perhaps we remember the Seinfeld episode when Mr.Pitt hired Elaine because she reminded him of Jacqueline Onassis. How? She was wearing the sunglass and scarf combination, of course. This style would be easy to bring back. Most of us have a scarf and a pair of sunglasses lying around. However, we just don’t see people wearing it. Who’s going to volunteer to bring this one back?
WORST: Animal Print
Leopard skin, tiger stripes, snakeskin. When done right, these can add a wild touch to a classy outfit. But we struggle to recall when overdoing animal print was actually considered cool. While these prints go in and out of fashion over the decades, we think we can all agree that they should be worn in moderation.
We think the over-saturation of these prints is what caused them to be seen as tacky. Some of us might try to break the stigma, but it’s always going to be there on some level. But tell us what you think. Are animal prints tasteful or tacky?
BEST: The Fanny Pack
Isn’t it a pain that women can’t make a dramatic exit without having to check that they remembered their purses? There must be an easier way to carry all the stuff we need. The fact that clothing manufacturers avoid putting real pockets in women’s trousers makes it more difficult. Well, there’s one solution ladies would like to see come back…
Fanny packs aren’t just for tourists. They are the ideal solution if you don’t want to carry a purse and don’t have enough pocket space. It would certainly be a lot easier if fanny packs were in style now. There has to be a better solution than carrying around a bulky bag everywhere you go!
WORST: Popcorn Shirts
We’ve all received a gift of clothing that wasn’t quite what we wanted. Perhaps the color didn’t suit us, or maybe it wasn’t the right size. But there are sizing mishaps, and then there’s this. If a shirt looks like it could fit an infant, maybe it wasn’t meant to be worn by adults. We’re told it will stretch when worn, but we aren’t sold.
Believe it or not, these crinkly shirts are intended for grownups. Some people call them popcorn shirts. Most women think they’re and look like the tissue paper used for streamers at kids’ parties. We’d have to say “thank you” if we received one as a gift, but we’d have a hard time being sincere.
BEST: Neon
Black is undeniably elegant. The little black dress is a fashion staple that works for almost any occasion. Plus, black is slimming. However, we’re getting tired of black all the time! It isn’t just black, but gray, white, cream, blush, and other neutral, washed-out colors. It looks like everyone is trying to be cautious and dressed for a boring business meeting or even a funeral.
Excessive color can seem intimidating, true, but at least it’s more interesting than neutral shades. Sure, the neon and pastel extremes of the 80s were a bit much, but at least they were eye-catching. At least the daring 70s psychedelic prints had a lot going on. Nowadays, the lack of color is enough to put us to sleep!
WORST: High-Low Skirts
We’re thankful that the mullet is mostly a thing of the past (though certain guys seem to want to bring it back). We can do without the mullet low-to-high skirts and dresses too. Perhaps these were the choice for someone who couldn’t decide whether to wear a long or a short skirt. We just think they are uncomfortable and inconvenient, and most ladies agree.
We can understand the idea behind the mullet skirt, but ultimately this was a trend that wasn’t meant to last. Asymmetrical headlines are one thing, but this was another. Instead of being flirty or sexy, they ended up looking confusing. This is a dated trend we’re glad to see gone!
WORST: Upside-Down Bikinis
It’s a trend, but not everyone is joining in. Bikinis are great for people who dare to bare, but some celebs have pushed the bar even further. Kendall Jenner and supermodel Elsa Hosk have joined the upside-down bikini trend. This type of bikini is way more revealing, but is that all there is to it?
Trying to get the bikini to work upside down is just too much trouble. The results can make many of us pray for summer to end. Some celebs can pull it off, but we still don’t get the hype. What’s the point of spending all this money on a nice bikini only to wear it wrong? What’s next, inside-out shirts? Wearing underwear outside of your pants?
BEST: Big Hair
If you look at a school yearbook from between 1980 and 1990, you’ll notice a common theme–great big hair! The glam rock metal bands in the 80s as well as high school cheerleaders must have spent hours feathering their hair. There were even special combs and ultra-hold hairsprays designed for these ‘dos.
Although today’s hairstyles seem a lot easier to maintain, we miss these big and bold styles. We remember these styles on starlets like Christina Applegate, Sarah Jessica Parker, and even Madonna! Why not take a chance and bring back some of that exciting and eye-catching volume? Who’s going to be first?
WORST: Overly Ripped Jeans
It wasn’t long ago that distressed jeans were a new thing. The older generations were baffled at the idea of paying good money for torn-up pants. Although we wore them with pride, we couldn’t deny the logic of their observation. We’re glad we can finally find intact jeans in stores, although there is a rumor that distressed jeans will be coming back.
We’d complain if we bought a donut and discovered someone had taken a big bite out of it. However, this isn’t the case when it comes to clothing. The more ripped up the denim is, the more valuable the jeans are. Forget buying distressed jeans, we’ll rip them ourselves!
BEST: Newsboy Hats
We wish we’d held onto our hats from the 90s and the early 00s, especially the newsboy hats. You didn’t have to love the musical “Newsies” to like this style. It was a great way of dealing with a bad hair day and added a bit of panache to any look.
The newsboy hats are a bit of a gender bend, which is why they should fit in with today’s fashion. It’s a sassy look that’s both elegant and casual. Maybe we can find a newsboy hat somewhere in our closets, though we’re sure we gave them all away. In any case, it’s worth digging through boxes to find.
WORST: Brand Names And Logos
When we hear the word “designer” we assume we’re buying a high-quality garment, otherwise, we’re just paying for the name. Most often than not, it’s the latter. Why should we assume that something is better just because it has a fancy designer name attached to it? Sadly, many people fall for this tactic, but we’re over it.
We’re struggling to understand why designer logos on clothes are still a thing. Of course, you can find knock-off items, but why bother with the label at all? We’re constantly telling each other to look beyond labels. It’s great this applies to people but it’s also true of clothing. We should learn to shop for quality, label or no label.
BEST: 90s Casual
In the 90s and early 00s, we liked to wear just about anything that had comfort and style. It sounds simple, and it is. All we needed was a band t-shirt, loose pants, a flannel shirt, and Converse sneakers. Whether we were headed to Starbucks, the record store, or a date, this look was perfect and versatile.
Another great thing about this look was that it was perfect for autumn or early spring when the weather can shift from hot to cold or vice versa. You could remove your flannel shirt and wrap it around your waist or use it to warm you up. Either way, you felt comfortable and in style. It wouldn’t be hard to bring this look back.
WORST: Ultra Short Shorts
The short shorts of the 70s were nothing like the 21st-century version. This style was reimagined with a vengeance. Britney Spears and Beyonce wore shorts that left little to the imagination in the 00s. They couldn’t have been comfortable, but at the time they were in peak fashion. However, your average woman doesn’t want to sacrifice basic comfort for style.
Some of these shorts were so short that they could’ve been indecent exposure. People have many colorful terms for these killer shorts, but most of them aren’t complimentary. Let’s just say that the best thing about winter is not having to wade through piles of these in clothing stores.
BEST: Acid Wash Jeans
Acid-washed jeans were everywhere in the 80s. In fact, if your jeans didn’t look washed out, you weren’t in style. No one in the 80s thought there would be a time when you couldn’t find acid-washed jeans. If we knew that stores would stop selling them, we would’ve held onto our acid-washed pairs for future generations.
Now we have to resort to watching music videos from the 80s for a glimpse of that look. We’d have to do a little work to bring them back. First, we’d have to figure out how to acid-wash the jeans. But we’re not crafty enough to pull it off. For now, we’ll stick to blue jeans and wait for the trend to return.
WORST: Jeggings
Real denim connoisseurs get understandably annoyed when everything has a blue jean or denim look. Denim skirts, denim purses, denim shirts, it’s no secret that denim is a ubiquitous fabric. However, when we see someone wearing a pair of jeggings, we really understand the problem. They don’t look anything like pants.
Jeggings were probably invented for people who can’t decide whether they want to wear leggings or jeans. They could have settled on skinny jeans, but no, they had to go even more skin-tight. This means leaving actual jeans altogether and going with something that can’t quite be defined. Are jeggings responsible for the decline of quality jeans? Who knows, but we’d be happy to see less of them.
BEST: Oversized Sunglasses
No, our grandmas didn’t really have big eyes. They just had huge glasses. Back in the day, people wanted to go incognito, or perhaps just wanted to magnify their eyes by wearing sunglasses that covered a third of their faces. We giggle about it now, but secretly we’d like this trend to make a comeback.
Did celebrities really fool the paparazzi with these? Huge, flamboyant retro sunglasses are almost like a mask. However, there’s no denying they’re a chic and eye-catching. Decided that you don’t want to be recognized? Put on these gigantic specs and you won’t be. Another perk is that they’re easy to find in your purse.
WORST: Bucket Hats
We don’t know if bucket hats are really in or not, we just see people wearing them. Perhaps they need something to put on their heads and that’s the only thing they have at home. Maybe they got a free one at a convention. We don’t know why people wear bucket hats, but we’re sure fashion isn’t their main priority.
Bucket hats come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. You can find them just about anywhere in the world. But for most of us, the only reason to wear a bucket hat is to hide a bowl cut. The kindest thing we can do to a bucket hat is to use it as a bucket instead of a hat!
BEST: Tunic Shirt/Dresses
Who doesn’t like a versatile item of clothing? This item can be a shirt or a dress, it’s up to you! These gender-neutral tunics can be dressed up or dressed down. Ladies love that these save room in their closets, and many praise the fact they’re not too flashy.
Sometimes we like to blur the lines of gender in fashion. Whether it’s a sporty hat, a hoodie, or a tunic, it’s a great way to switch up your look. We’d love to see stores stocking up on these again. Whether we‘d wear it with leggings or loose pants–we’re free to make our own choices.
WORST: See-Through Clothing
Why does modern clothing make it difficult to cover up? Is it because manufacturers want to keep costs down, or do they really want us to wear clothing that is as thin as tissue paper? Why do we have to wear several layers of clothing just to avoid a see-through outfit?
We aren’t being the modesty police, this isn’t about trying to cover up excessively. It’s just that when we buy a shirt or a dress, we don’t want people to see our bra or underwear. Can we bring back the time when we only had to buy one shirt instead of wearing several to avoid flashing our stuff to the world?
BEST: Flannel Shirts
It may not be the same as a Scottish kilt, but a bit of flannel around the waist can do wonders for an outfit/ We’re sure of one thing–those of us who like to drape a flannel shirt around our waist aren’t going to stop, even if it’s out of style. And is this look anything but timeless?
The heyday of the flannel shirt around the waist trend was the 90s. It’s really convenient in the fall and spring. It’s annoying when a day starts hot and gets cold in the evening. And carrying around a jacket is just inconvenient. A flannel shirt is both handy and fashionable!
WORST: The Whale Tail
Remember when celebrities like Christine Aguilera and Paris Hilton sported this cheeky look? This style, affectionately called “the whale tail” was something we hoped was long gone from the fashion scene. Unfortunately, there have been some whale tail sightings recently and we hope none of them are beached.
We aren’t prudes, but why does anyone want to see your underwear? In any case, the effect is created by thongs pulled up too high, or pants that are too low. Would anyone be willing to wear this to school or work? We seriously can’t imagine getting anything worthwhile done wearing a whale tail. Plus, it looks super uncomfortable!
BEST: Cargo Pants
Imagine not having to carry a purse when you leave the house. Carrying everything in our pockets keeps us hands-free. Sounds pretty convenient, right? We totally forgot that cargo pants gave us easy access to all our stuff. However, there’s one problem. Are cargo pants fashionable? They may not be trendy, but we wish they were!
However, they might be making a comeback. Cargo pants and shorts were all the rage in the early 00s, and there are some signs that people are willing to bring them back. We’re looking forward to keeping our bags at home and carrying our stuff in our pockets. Hands-free is always better!
WORST: Fake Pockets
Some of us know what it’s like to have our pockets picked. While having people invade our pockets is one problem, the lack of pockets is another problem in and of itself! It’s disappointing to buy a pair of pants that look like they have pockets only to realize that they’re fake. We think these should be outlawed.
At the very least, they seem like false advertising. They appear to be pockets, but you can’t put anything in them. What’s the point? We understand decoy ducks, but not decoy pockets. Why make clothing like this? Ladies are in agreement that this trend has to go!
BEST: Sundresses
Whatever happened to cute summer dresses? The time of year may determine whether we retire the summer dresses or have them hanging in our clothes. However, we noticed that stores aren’t stocking as many of these flirty pieces, even during the summer months. Women of the internet proclaim their love for the cute, bouncy, colorful look of summer dresses.
Casual dresses work at the beach with sandals or dressed up for a date. Adding accessories can give you many looks out of one dress. So why not pull out those summer favorites? If the weather’s fine, these dresses are good to go!
WORST: Camel-Toed Shoes
Designers in the footwear industry must be looking for something new. After all, it’s probably hard to come up with unique concepts for footwear. The basic requirements for a shoe should include comfort and coverage. However, the designers of these had something else in mind. We aren’t sure who finds these shoes attractive. When we see someone wearing a pair, your first question is likely, “are those comfortable?”
We can’t imagine anyone wearing these just for aesthetics. They don’t look good. Maybe they’re meant to make your feet look exactly like a camel, particularly with light brown or tawny-colored leather. We’ll save footwear like this for Halloween and costume parties, thanks.
BEST: Natural Makeup
We all miss the natural makeup looks of the 70s. The barely there look when it comes to cosmetics definitely beats the full-face looks we see today. When we’re told someone’s putting their face on, we didn’t think they meant a whole new layer of skin. It’s sad to see so many people caking on makeup. Have you ever caught someone who usually likes to pile on cosmetics early in the morning or late at night?
Maybe they have removed their makeup or haven’t put it on yet. We are amazed they look so much better without it! We’re hoping the trend of less is more will come back. It’s great to leave the house with glowing natural skin and just a bit of eyeliner and lipstick.
WORST: Laminated Or Soap Brows
Those of us who pluck our eyebrows know what a pain it is–literally. However, we’re not sure the other extreme is all that great. It’s one thing to make peace with your body hair. Flaunting the eyebrows by “laminating” them might be a step too far. Yes, laminating the brows is an actual procedure, but it doesn’t involve a machine and hot plastic.
It involves stretching out the eyebrows to cover bare patches and make the brows look fuller. Instead, it looks like the person got such a fright that their eyebrows are standing on end. This isn’t the kind of look any of us are going for.
