Jonna Miller is a blonde woman from the country with scathing wit and a sharp sense of humor. She fell in love with an Amish man named David, and the two married and started a family.

She had always described herself as having “a big mouth”, and was often one to crack sarcastic jokes. But what would she do with this undeniable gift of gab and ability to make people laugh?

One thing Jonna and David had in common was that they were both raised in small, rural towns. However, their upbringings were actually shockingly different! David had grown up in an Amish community. He had been taught from a young age to appreciate the value of hard work.

Despite their different upbringings, they were still able to find common ground to make their relationship work. “Sure, we have different backgrounds,” Jonna has said on her blog, “but they say opposites attract, and in our case, this couldn’t be truer.”

Just as you might expect from any budding relationship, Jonna and David had to work through many points of adjustment and compromise, especially since they had come from such different backgrounds. Love is obviously an important factor in a relationship, but without the dedication and hard work, things might not last.

You might expect a young couple that had been married so recently to be immersed with each other. After all, right after a wedding, most couples would be basking in the glow of their new lives together. But this was not the case For David and Jonna, far from it.

David usually worked very long hours at his job and came home late almost every night. Being raised Amish, he was used to putting in hard work. But his lack of time spent at home became difficult for his marriage. Jonna was not pleased.

Jonna was growing more and more frustrated with her husband coming home late every single night. His long hours began to take a toll on Jonna, especially since she had to spend every day alone with their child.

She was beginning to feel lonely, she missed her husband and was craving just a bit of quality time to spend with him. “I’m married to a hard-working man and I would be lying if I said that it didn’t take a toll on me,” she said in one blog post. Things were about to get even more difficult for their relationship.

Her resentment towards her husband’s working hours was beginning to grow stronger and stronger. Spending all this time home alone was not how she had expected her marriage to be. The reality of the situation really frustrated her. But there was one place where she was able to vent.

She took to her computer and shared her feelings with the readers of her blog, and may have used some less than charitable words to describe her husband. In one post she complained that David had “rough, cracked hands and crows feet,” despite being under the age of 30. Very harsh!

Jonna was still very self aware while making all these harsh criticisms of her husband. She knew she was being very hard on David. She even told her readers that she had created “a lose-lose situation” for him. “He literally can’t win. If he doesn’t work late, we won’t get the new furniture set that I have to have,” she said.

She then continued on to say, “If he does work later, he comes home to a nagging wife who is desperate for his attention.” It seemed like there was no scenario where Jonna would be happy with her husband.

One night Jonna was feeling particularly disappointed in the direction her marriage had taken. She returned to her blog to lament that her relationship didn’t match the fairytale romance that she had always craved for. “I don’t recall the Prince missing dinners because he was working overtime,” she confided to her readers.

She came to the conclusion that she would confront him when he returned from work. She was determined to get to the bottom of this issue, no matter the cost.

As Jonna waited for David to get back from work she continued with her household duties, the resentment and frustration growing inside her. But as she was engaged in her angry thoughts she was interrupted by the sound of the dryer going off.

Being a homemaker meant that she had been juggling several chores throughout the day, and in her anger, she had forgotten that she had put the load in to dry. She rushed to the laundry room. Her bitter feelings were so intense she could hardly focus on putting the clothes away.

As she folded the clothes and separated them into piles, her head was spinning with thoughts. She kept wondering why David was never home, “why does he not want to spend time with me? We’re newlyweds, aren’t we supposed to be in the honeymoon stage?” she had written on her blog.

She thought about what she would say when he returned from work, and how she would accuse him of staying away from her on purpose. She was working herself up into a tizzy, barely focusing on the laundry she was folding.

Jonna had not really been paying close attention to the laundry, she was working on autopilot as her mind was totally preoccupied with the issues she had with David. Nearly all the clothes had been folded and put into separate piles, one for her clothes and one for David’s. That’s when something caught her attention.

She had put the laundry away dozens of times, but in all her anger at her husband she had never noticed this before. The revelation she had in that moment made her realize the truth about her husband.

Jonna saw that all of her clothes were in good condition, but her husband’s were old and worn out. “Why did my clothes look vibrant, clean, and new?” she wrote, “His were dingy, stained, and torn.” She thought about it for a moment. And that’s when it dawned on her.

She remembered all the times they had gone shopping together, and couldn’t recall a single time David had ever bought new clothes for himself. It was then that she made the connection between her husband’s long hours and his work ethic.

Her anger began to melt away and was replaced by shame as she sat there looking at the difference in the condition of their clothes. She could not believe how ungrateful she had been to her husband, who had given her so much. “This man provided more than I deserve,” she wrote on her blog.

She added that whenever she had a request or wanted something for herself, David would never turn her down. All of the positive aspects of her husband began to come back, and her frustration was replaced by admiration.

This realization reminded Jonna of her and David’s different backgrounds, that her husband had been brought up to truly value hard work. She started to feel guilty about how she had felt before. “I get spoiled with the fruits of his labor and he is okay with a pair of torn boxer briefs.”

“I was acting as if he was out partying with his friends, but his laundry told a completely different story.” The truth of the situation could not have been more apparent, and it took a closer look at his clothes to understand that.

Jonna understood that David had been sacrificing the time he could’ve been spending at home, especially with their young daughter who was just in the early years of her life, and all so he could provide a good life for her.

She realized that he would probably also prefer being home with his family instead of putting in those long, tiring hours at work. Jonna went back to her blog and read the harsh comments she had written about his cracked hands, she felt a horrible pang of guilt. She had been so wrong about him.

All the times David had missed dinners with her she had assumed were because he wasn’t interested in her, when really he was just too exhausted after working for so many hours. She had been convinced he wasn’t interested in her when really he was doing all this because he loved her.

She also noted that he always came home with a sunny attitude, even after he was exhausted from working hours of overtime. And all this time she had been greeting his smiling face with contempt. She felt so guilty.

At that moment, Jonna made the decision to be more compassionate towards her husband and to not be so critical when he came home late from work. “Sure, I miss him and want to spend time with him throughout the week,” Jonna told her readers after her epiphany, “but I have realized he is offering me the most beautiful form of love there is.”

It amazed her that folding this one load of laundry had brought her to this realization. She was glad to have come to this conclusion, one that would undoubtedly strengthen her marriage.

It was likely that other women (and maybe even men, too!) would have been in the same or similar situation. She knew this post would make people understand how important it was to be empathetic to their spouse.

And David and Delanie are no longer the only members of her little family. In 2019 Jonna was pregnant again, this time with a set of twins! And you better believe she kept the comedy coming during those nine months of pregnancy. Now their family count is up to five.

You can imagine the experience of having two newborns at the same time has given Jonna a whole lot more material to speak about. She continues to upload on YouTube and Instagram, cracking jokes about motherhood and using her self deprecating humor to talk about her body after having three kids.
