Herbert Hoover was President during the beginning of the Great Depression, and was blamed by many for causing the Depression with his tax hikes in order to help balance the government budget.
He told Americans that the worst was behind them in 1930, but he was dead wrong.

Shanty towns that sprang up as more and more people lost their homes, which were called ‘Hoovervilles’. Food in soup kitchens was often called ‘Hoover Stew’, and the newspapers that people used to keep themselves warm were ‘Hoover blankets’.
‘Hoover wagons’ were broken down cars pulled by horses. Basically anything broken was linked to Hoover.
