Kids were no longer kept by age in separate classes, but taught collectively.

This was caused by the job market for kids drying up, so more and more kids found themselves seeking out an education.
School was not as strictly regulated as it is in the modern day, so students didn’t always spend the traditional 9 months in school, with the school year differing by area.
