The Dust Bowl was one of the most devastating aspects of the Great Depression. A period of severe drought and over-tilling of land caused the soil to be weak, leading to massive dust storms.

Over 100 million acres of land were affected by the storms, and more than 300,000 people fled their destroyed farmsteads and land to California to escape the destruction.
Ironically, this happened at the same time that lawmakers were debating a bill for soil conservation.
