In 1929, unemployment in the US was only 3%. By 1933 before the Great Depression was over, that number had skyrocketed to 25%.

Peddling apples in the street became a popular profession in New York City, with over 6,000 individuals taking up the job during the Depression.
This also had a greater effect than it would in the modern day due to the sign of the times, where there was traditionally only one “bread-winner” in the family, as opposed to two today.
