The great depression was the worst economic downturn in history- people simply weren’t getting enough food to survive, therefore it was extremely difficult to keep people from dying of starvation. One of the most known dishes from that time is an Icelandic dish- Slátur, made out of the innards of a sheep.

Surviving The Depression
In New York City, milk consumption declined by a million gallons a day, and with each year the number of deaths caused by starvation rose, but seems like the government was having delusions about the actual state of the country. President Herbert Hoover declared; “Nobody is actually starving. The hoboes are better fed than they have ever been.”
