Many workers and families left Texas behind and fled to California, due to the fact that Texas was one of the areas affected greatly by the Dust Bowl. They were trying to enhance their quality of life, but they didn’t always have a way to get there.

Hitch-hiking was a popular option to get from one place to another because it was cheap and most didn’t have their own cars. Caravans such as this one would give people a ride- this one is giving a group of kids a ride from Abilene, Texas, to California in 1936.
