Charles Darrow invented Monopoly in 1933, based off of Atlantic City, NJ. The idea behind the game was to allow players to “imagine” themselves having wealth, which was an apt theme as the country was dragging itself out of the worst of the Depression.

But the game would finally come to market after being rejected by manufacturers and finding local success, and would go on to become one of the most successful games in history.
