During the Depression, countless “Penny Auctions” took place, where farmers would force the price to stay at just pennies, nickels, and dimes, so the farmer could buy back his farm.
This was done by dissuading those who wanted to make higher bids, either by persuasion, or by holding unhung nooses in the air as a warning to those who might want to save a bundle.
