Between the years 1930 and 1935, over 750,000 farms were lost by families across America to sheriff sales or bankruptcy. But the farming industry banded together to help one another.

I’ll See Your Potato Famine And Raise You a Depression

During the Depression, countless “Penny Auctions” took place, where farmers would force the price to stay at just pennies, nickels, and dimes, so the farmer could buy back his farm.

This was done by dissuading those who wanted to make higher bids, either by persuasion, or by holding unhung nooses in the air as a warning to those who might want to save a bundle.
