The U.S military eventually had to intervene, they kept the festival going amid the chaos by deploying army issued helicoptered to deliver performers- Arlo Gutherie and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young had to be flown in.

The military also delivered much-needed medical supplies and food, and other groups sprang into action as well.

More Food Was Helicoptered in 

The residents of Sullivan County rallied with the local sheriff’s office to donate about 1,000 sandwiches, water, fruit, and canned goods, and the Monticello Jewish Community Center also supplied thousands of sandwiches that were flown into the area via a nearby air force base.
