Messy Breakups That Happened Over Text
Dealing with a breakup is never easy. Whether you’re the one doing the dumping or the one being dumped these are extremely difficult conversations to have. Maybe that’s why so many people have decided to move the break up talk to text. You would think there would be less drama over typed out messages, but you’d be wrong! These conversations are just as messy as any in-person breakup, the only difference is that there’s no screaming or shattering glass. Never before have there been text messages so entertaining to read, that is unless you were one of the people involved.
These outrageous breakup conversations will have you gasping with shock and laughing your butt off
1. That Was Awkward
This might be one of those situations where autocorrect actually does you a favor. This guy might have never guessed that his girlfriend was mulling over the idea of a breakup if his phone hadn’t correcting “jumping” to “dumping”. He was probably looking forward to getting home and getting down with his girl, but now it seems like he might have to find a new place to stay.
It might be an awkward moment for Jenna, but she shouldn’t have waited this long to speak up, and you know she’s been wanting to split for a while. There’s no other way to explain how quickly and nonchalantly she responded to his message. That must be totally heartbreaking on her now ex-boyfriend.
2. Never Mind I’ll Find Someone Like You
the first thing we have to comment on is how cowardly it is to break up with someone over text. If you’ve been going out long enough to call her “babe”, you’ve been going out long enough to warrant an in-person breakup. At the very least, you should make the effort to check your breakup text for proper spelling and capitalization!
Maybe these two are just a couple of toxic people who wound up together because her reaction doesn’t appear to be the most mature either. Let’s hope none of us ever find a partner like either of these two. Fate might’ve brought these two together, but their bad attitude and lack of respect probably drove them apart!
3. Poof, You’re Single
This is a weird way to test out your relationship. It looks like this guy was on the fence about his girlfriend, wondering whether or not he should stick it out or end things, but it would seem that her poem might have sealed the deal. She may have thought she was being clever with that little rhyme, but he simply wasn’t having it.
Maybe it’s for the best, if he can’t take a joke then maybe he’s not the kind of person you want to be with. Especially if he’s going to break up with you over a text conversation. The poem is cute if you’re the kind of person who can laugh at yourself. We think she’s the one who dodged a bullet here.
4. Insensitive Magic Trick
Looks like this dude thought he had the upper hand when he came at his girlfriend with this message. He was anticipating that she would answer “yes”, to which he would reply “poof, you’re single.” Unfortunately, his little attempt at a funny breakup didn’t really work out, as she answered with a pretty clear “no”. But in the end, he still ended things, though it wasn’t in the hilarious way he imagined it.
She probably rolled her eyes and deleted his number right after that last message. She’s thinking that she’s better off without him, and we can’t say we disagree. If someone’s going to steal some lame joke off the internet to break up with you you’re better off without them
5. Emoji Breakup
Some people just don’t have a way with words, and in those situations, it’s emojis that come to the rescue. If you want to get the message across that you’re happy, sad, or laughing your butt off, emojis are the perfect thing to use. It looks like this girl took it a step too far when she broke up with her boyfriend using nothing but emojis!
At least he got the message in the end? A pretty cold way to dump someone, but we can’t deny that we find it very entertaining. This is going to be quite a story for this ex-boyfriend to tell the next time he’s hanging out with his guy friends. We totally get why he shared this online, you need to see it to believe it!
6. Straight Forward
This message is self-explanatory. This girl just wanted to end it via text and nothing more. She didn’t want to make any effort actually meeting her now ex-boyfriend. Well, whatever floats this girl’s boat. Anyways, the end result is that she kinda feels bad for breaking up this way, but the guy is not having it. He knows he’s now hot in the market and will find love again.
She cleverly replied saying she understood his wishes and that, “there’s only so much sexy one guy can take.” Obviously, she was too bombastic for him to handle, and that he might need to move onto someone a little less awesome. She’s definitely playing it cool and not letting him know whether or not she has any hurt feelings.
7. “You Repulse Me”
We don’t even want to know what kind of crazy shenanigans went on in this relationship. Apparently, Dan over here doesn’t know how to keep certain comments to himself, he felt totally comfortable saying that he thinks his girlfriend’s sister is hot. Then on the flip side, you have his now ex-girlfriend saying that he repulses her, a pretty strong adjective.
We’re guessing that these two didn’t have the most stellar communication skills. Or rather, their communication was so open that they felt comfortable saying whatever the heck they wanted, no matter how harsh or inappropriate. Either these two were a toxic match, or they’re both messed up in the same way and meant to be together.
8. Avoiding Responsibility
There’s no way to avoid it, sometimes you just have to face your partner when they come to you with complicated news. You can decide to stick with them through the tough times, or break things off and leave them. But it looks like this guy had a different third solution he tried out. Instead of giving his girlfriend any clear answer, he tried to make it look like his number had been changed.
Had he paid just a little more attention before sending the text he would have realized that he misspelled “you”. It looks like his girlfriend caught the typo and realized it couldn’t have been a real message from AT&T. She was understandably furious, but he didn’t back down!
9. Not Letting Go
It’s not always easy to accept that your boyfriend or girlfriend wants to end things. Everyone has their own way of dealing with a breakup, some people block their ex, others cry and drown their feelings in ice cream. But this girl had a totally different way of taking it, she wasn’t going to let him go that easily! Seems like she’s the stubborn type.
Instead of accepting his wishes to break up, she simply pretended that his phone was autocorrecting and that all his messages were meaningless. This is a pretty funny way to handle bad news, but we don’t think it’s going to work in the long run. After all, if he dumps you in person you won’t be able to use the autocorrect excuse!
10. Definitely Not Good
Something truly crazy must have happened during the span of these few messages, but what could it possibly be? Was it Blake who acted out of line and hurt his girlfriend beyond repair, or did she do something that caused him to want to leave her for good? There’s no way to know unless we spoke to one of these two, but we can make a few Sherlock level deductions.
Based on the girlfriend being the first to send the “We still good?” message, it would appear that she did something wrong which he found out about. Considering her “I don’t really care anymore” response, the case that the girlfriend is the guilty party is even stronger. Case closed!
11. Song Lyrics Prank Gone Real
We’re guessing these two have to be pretty young for their breakup to go this well, especially after the boyfriend used song lyrics to break up with his girl! Maybe the two of them came together over their shared love of Avenged Sevenfold, therefore quoting their lyrics at any occasion is seen as acceptable. This girl doesn’t even care that she’s just been dumped!
She’s just happy to have her favorite band’s lyrics quoted to her, the context doesn’t seem to matter at all. But once they grow up they’ll probably feel differently about this breakup method, or at least we hope that will be the case. This isn’t something you can try with most people, we promise it won’t be taken very well!
12. Inappropriate Text
If there’s one thing couples need to establish it’s their texting boundaries. Not everyone is going to be available at all hours of the day to answer text messages, and it’s unrealistic to fly off the handle if your partner doesn’t answer your messages immediately. This person clearly didn’t understand that their partner might be busy and hounded them with texts, that’s when things got ugly.
Clearly, their partner saw that they were acting irrationally, not to mention incredibly clingy. That’s when they realized it was probably time for them to end things. Instead of being upfront, they told their soon to be ex that they were at a funeral. Who died? Their feelings for them. Bye-bye!
13. Just A Little Miscommunication
There’s really no sense in entertaining these kinds of “what if” questions with your partner, they can only end badly. If you keep talking about what would happen if you were to break up then it might actually happen, at least that seems to have been the case with this couple here. Looks like this guy was testing his girlfriend’s faithfulness, and he didn’t appreciate her answer.
But it looks like she turned the situation around pretty quickly, was that her intention the entire time? There’s no way to know, plus it will forever remain a mystery as to whether her little trick got him to come back to her. We definitely wouldn’t recommend trying this out.
14. Once A Cheater, Always A Cheater
Jonathan made one fatal mistake when he decided to flirt with a girl who wasn’t his girlfriend. Aside from cheating, he accidentally sent the flirtatious message to his girlfriend instead of the new chick, oops! To make matters worse, the person who answered the text was actually Jessica’s very angry father, and it looks like he isn’t going to stand for his sneaky behavior.
Apparently, Jonathan lied about where he was going, claiming he went to visit his grandma and hitting up a concert venue instead. Now he’s going to have to answer to Jessica’s dad, and he isn’t going to be as charitable as Jessica might have been with the news. Better confess ASAP, for your own health!
15. Dumpsville
Breaking up with someone over text is insensitive as it is, but this person took it to a completely different level. When someone invests their time and energy into a relationship, they expect the other person to have the courtesy to end things in person, no matter how difficult that might be. But if there’s one way NOT to end things over text, it’s like this.
Honestly, this sounds more like a cruel playground joke than something you use to tell someone you’re leaving them. Why they thought this was an acceptable way to break up with their partner we have no idea, maybe they just weren’t raised right. For those of you getting into the dating world, don’t be like this person!
16. I Am Leaving You
There are many different shortcuts when texting that let you say full sentences in a few letters. For example, BRB stands for “be right back”, and ILY stands for “I love you”. It looks like this person might have been confused about what ILY actually stood for, because they used it as a way to tell their partner they were breaking up with them.
It looks like their now ex didn’t even see it coming, they were in the loop enough to know that ILY stands for “I love you” and thought things were still cool. That’s got to be super awkward. A simple misunderstanding could make a breakup way worse than it has to be, that’s why it’s better not to do them over text!
17. Can’t Speak English
Looks like this couple recently moved their conversations onto the text and can’t seem to agree on how their messages should be sent. There are those people who only use chatspeak, everything is abbreviated or spelled in some type of slang. But on the flip side, there are others who insist on using correct grammar and punctuation, even when it comes to text messages.
These two were on totally different sides of the fence on this issue, and it was inevitably what caused them to break up. The one side that couldn’t stand all the incorrect spelling and casual messages really blew up in their ex’s face, it looks like there’s no chance of these two talking again. But maybe that’s for the best!
18. Worst Way To Find Out
One of the most important rules of texting is that you check who your message is being sent out to before hitting that “send” button. Otherwise, you might end up sending a pretty dramatic message to the wrong person, which is exactly what happened here. To make matters worse, it looks like this woman got her daughter caught in the crossfire of a very ugly divorce.
This has got to be the worst way to find out that your parents are going to split up. Not to mention, it was probably pretty jarring for this girl to get a message from her mom that seemed to be telling her to pack up and leave! Breakfast with this family is going to be really awkward in the morning…
19. My Standards, Bye.
This person was looking for a quick out to their relationship, and they definitely got it! Most people might wait for a less casual moment to let someone know they want to break up, or at least put it into softer terms. But nope, this person wants their ex to know that their standards have grown since they met, and now things are over.
It might be a harsh way to end things but you can’t say it wasn’t over with quickly! It’s like ripping off a band-aid. Though we’re not sure their ex is going to see it that way, they’ll probably be hurt for a while over a comment like that. But to us outsiders it’s still kind of funny.
20. Marriage Proposal Fail
This is what happens when all your important relationship news goes through text. Unless these two are in a long-distance relationship there’s really no excuse. Anyway, it looks like they won’t be going out very much longer, the two of them were on very different pages. Jacob here couldn’t wait to end things, but his girlfriend was looking to move things forward.
We have no idea how two people could have such different perspectives on where their relationship is going. We feel bad for the girlfriend, she must’ve been sure she was going to get a “yes” to her proposal, but instead got the complete opposite. Maybe that’s what happens when all your communication happens over text!
21. It’s Not You, It’s Me
We’re getting pretty mixed signals from this exchange. We can’t be sure if either side is joking, or if this breakup message was actually intended to be serious. Is he trying to say that he’s leaving her because he loves her too much? And why is she answering all of his messages with emojis? You guys, just cut out the middleman and call each other already!
This isn’t the kind of conversation you want to have over text messages. But if this dude really is serious with his breakup message then he had a serious problem. He needs to sort out his own emotions before confusing another person with a text like that. Honestly, we can’t blame her if her next emoji is rolling its eyes!
22. Don’t Make It Worst
Looks like Derek is more open about his feelings with his friends than with his girlfriend. Unfortunately, his friends don’t seem to be the best at keeping secrets, as one of them decided to message her and spill the beans. This obviously came as a total shock to the girlfriend, who had no idea what Derek’s true feelings were. At least this gives her the chance to end things first.
It’s pretty cowardly of Derek to only let his friends know that he wants to end things, keeping his true feelings a secret from his girlfriend. This is definitely the worst way to find out your boyfriend wants to end things. Not to mention, super awkward for Derek’s BFF!
23. We’re Octagon
It looks like autocorrect interrupted this couple’s intense breakup conversation. It’s super awkward but it definitely helped break some of the tension. Isaiah clearly isn’t ready to let this girl go, he wants to hang onto her no matter what. But she’s had enough of him and is done giving him chances, she’s ready to leave him and move on. She is Octo-GONE.
You can tell she’s totally over him because she stopped in the middle of their conversation to laugh at her autocorrect blunder. We’re not sure if Isaiah is laughing along with her, he seems to be way too torn up over their relationship ending. But better to laugh than to cry, right? Let’s hope Isaiah will be able to lighten up.
24. This Is Messed Up
Sometimes people don’t know exactly how they’re going to end things with their significant other. Figuring out the right wording can be a challenge especially when you’re trying not to hurt the other person’s feelings. But we don’t exactly recommend using this approach. You should ask literally anyone but the person you’re dumping for advice on what to say. Throwing her words right back at her has got to sting.
It seems like Cathy really didn’t see it coming, and who would have? If your partner came to you with advice on how to break up with someone would you think you were getting dumped? Well, she won’t have to wonder if things are going south anymore, that’s for sure.
25. Nah Fam
Sometimes stubbornness will get you where you want to go, but we’re not sure if that applies to a situation like this. It looks like this guy really wanted to end things with his girlfriend, but she wasn’t about to budge. Can you break up with someone if they refuse to be broken up with? We’re guessing yes, but this girl has a different theory in mind.
Her boyfriend seems to be pretty annoyed that she refuses to take the hint. We wonder how long it’s going to take before they eventually break up, maybe they’ll keep going back and forth until one of them caves in. We’re willing to bet that the girlfriend will outlast him!
26. Jenni Is Very Classy
Looks like Jenni’s now ex-boyfriend had some deep-seated feelings of anger towards her, something he was probably keeping bottled up for a while. If she had never made that spelling mistake in her text message she might have never found out! Sometimes you never know that someone is secretly mad at you until something like this slips out.
Her ex-boyfriend is probably regretting how quick he was to react. If he had just kept his mouth shut and asked her what she meant they might have stayed together. It’s a good thing that wasn’t the case, we think Jenni deserves better than that. Oh, and that backpedaling isn’t going to work this late in the game, buddy!
27. A Man Of Too Many Words
It looks like this guy had a laundry list of reasons he wanted to leave his girlfriend. Based on some of the items on this list, we’re starting to think she has more to gain from a breakup than he does. Either she just isn’t that interested in him or he’s an overly controlling psychopath, there can be no in between.
We’re not sure if she asked for his reasons for wanting to break up or if he offered them unsolicited, but he didn’t need to get that thorough. Maybe they had been going out for a long time and the list of things had eventually grown so long that he had to put it out there before he exploded.
28. Don’t Take This The Wrong Way
Oof, it really looks like Melissa wasn’t feeling the whole relationship thing. This might be perfectly understandable since the context of the message indicates they’re in middle school or high school. Clearly, she doesn’t want to invest time or effort into the relationship, she wants to do her own thing. But this dude isn’t having any of that, maybe he got too attached too quickly.
He didn’t respond very well to her suggestion, which is basically a roundabout way of saying she wants him out of her life. He played the game her way and agreed to just nod at her while giving her the finger at the same time. Harsh, but we guess he took it hard!
29. Fool Me Once…
Breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend over text is in bad taste, but it’s a whole different ballpark when you dump your spouse that way! At first glance, it appears that this is what this husband was doing, and his wife wasn’t going to take it. She retorted that he couldn’t just “break up” with her, after all, they live in the same house!
But it would appear that this text wasn’t meant for his wife, instead, he meant to send it to somebody else. But wait a minute, if he’s married then who exactly is he breaking up with? That seems to be the question that’s on his wife’s mind. He better barricade himself in the bathroom, and fast!
30. Batman Style
To the untrained eye, it might appear that Jake here wrote a lovely heartfelt message when breaking up with his girlfriend. But she was a little quicker than he might have thought, because she instantly recognized where all those words came from, and she wasn’t afraid to call him out on it! In response to his lengthy message she came back with, “Did you just use a Batman reference in your breakup line?”.
There was nothing left for him to do aside from sheepishly admit that she was right. If he couldn’t use words from the heart then maybe it really was time for him to leave. Maybe he’ll be lucky and the next time he steals from Batman it will go unnoticed!
31. Knock Knock Joke
Some people say that laughter is the best medicine, that’s probably why some people use humor to cope with tragedy or bad news. But you can’t just thrust comedy onto someone who has no idea what the bad news is yet. That was the mistake this person made when they were letting their partner know they wanted out of the relationship.
It would be an understatement to say that their partner didn’t appreciate this method of breaking up. In fact, they had a few choice words to describe what they really thought of them. This is definitely not what we would call a clean breakup, there’s definitely going to be some bad blood between these two for a long time.
32. Is My Xbox Ok?
This is certainly one way to break the bad news. It looks like this girl wanted to distract her boyfriend with some made-up story about how she broke his Xbox before she revealed the actual purpose of her message. We guess she figured he’d be so relieved to find out that his gaming console was alright that he wouldn’t even care that she was dumping him.
And you know what? It actually worked! We can’t believe this guy valued his Xbox over his relationship, but then again it doesn’t seem like his girlfriend was that great to begin with. At the very least, he’ll have much more time to spend playing video games now that he’s newly single.
33. No Soul
It’s good to know what your partner’s deal breakers are, even if they have a few silly ones. Sometimes you’ll end up crossing a line that will end things before you even realize you’ve done wrong, and it looks like that’s exactly what happened here. We’re not sure how a grown adult still hasn’t seen the Lion King, but this dude was definitely late to the party.
But it wasn’t only the fact that he hadn’t seen the classic film yet, he didn’t cry during the most emotional scene in Disney movie history. The only conclusion anyone would come to is that they have no soul, and it looks like their partner agrees 100%! Bummer for this guy, better grows a soul if you don’t want to die alone!
34. You Can Never Be Friends
After a breakup, there’s always the one person who has the expectation that they can remain friends with their ex. This is rarely something that’s possible to do, as one side will always be more hurt or heartbroken than the other. We don’t know what caused these two to split, but it sounds like it was bad enough that they won’t end up being BFFs.
Instead of politely declining their offer of friendship, this person went full-on vindictive and drew their ex into a trap. At first, they played along as if they actually wanted to remain in contact, only to tell them to shove it where the sun doesn’t shine. Harsh words, but maybe they did something to deserve it!
