Facts We May Not Know About Chernobyl Disaster
Horrifying Deaths
The fires of Chernobyl were extinguished within six hours after the explosion. So, what about the firefighters who helped control the flames? Unfortunately, their lives were snuffed out as well. Lyudmilla Ignatenko, the pregnant wife of the first firefighter on the scene, was quoted as saying, “I remember shock and pain when I saw my beautiful – the world’s most beautiful – husband looking like a bloodied monster”. Her husband had been exposed to some of the worst radiation levels of the entire incident.

Afterwards, his slow, agonizing decay led to both the death of himself and his unborn daughter, who became exposed when Lyudmilla visited her husband in the hospital. Doctors told her that her husband was radioactive himself, and her unborn baby reacted to it like a sponge, saving Lyudmilla in the process.
