Them: What is this concoction and why do you only drink it on Christmas?

You: According to historians, eggnog was inspired by a medieval drink called “posset”, an alcoholic refreshment compiled of eggs, milk, and sometimes figs or sherry.

These were all pricey ingredients at the time, so the wealthy used it to toast with. It only became a holiday drink when colonists brought it over from England and found a way to make it cheaper by vetoing the figs and substituting rum for sherry. And about its strange name- it’s said that “nog”A was short for “noggin,” slang for a wooden cup.
