Celebrity Romances That Blossomed On Set

Posted by E. Faltyn

In our day-to-day lives, it’s not uncommon to meet our partners in the workplace. The same goes for actors, meeting at work on movie sets is easy – especially when part of the job is acting like a couple!  This can help Hollywood stars connect and bring their real-life passion to the big screen. Though they probably don’t expect sparks to fly, sometimes life is unpredictable.

From the beloved vampire couple, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart to John Galecki and Kaley Cuoco on The Big Bang Theory, some of the most romantic duos first crossed paths as colleagues and continued their relationships long after production wrapped.

Take a look at these iconic celebrity soulmates who met on the set!

cheatsheet

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds met back in 2011 on the set of the superhero film Green Lantern, which ended in a happy marriage. Reynolds shares, “We were friends and buddies, and then about a year and a half later, we actually went on a double date but we were dating separate people.” The couple, now married for a decade with three daughters, laugh at the beginning signs of love after meeting on set.

After building a friendship throughout the filming of Green Lantern, and their double date with the wrong partners, the two stayed in touch. Both traveling to Boston, Blake and Ryan took the train together and Ryan finally won Blake over with “sob stories”. A week later, Reynolds joked that they should buy a house together, and that’s exactly what they did.

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

Couple Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli weren’t just acting on set of the successful Netflix series Orange is the New Black. Morelli, married to a man at the time, recalls crushing on Wiley as early as reviewing her audition tape. Wiley, openly lesbian throughout her 20s, helped Morelli accept her sexuality as a friend, and eventually a lover through their on-screen relationship in the Netflix series about women’s prison.

insider

Friends and coworkers since 2012 and partners since 2014, Samira and Lauren recently welcomed their first child. Isn’t that an incredible love story? After Poussey was written out of the series, the two of them should’ve collaborated on a film based on their romance!

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s relationship goes way back to 1994. They met when Jada auditioned to play Will’s girlfriend in the classic sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Jada didn’t get the part, but they both felt the spark. A year later, Will Smith’s first wife divorced him and he immediately began seeing Jada.

The couple is in favor of giving each other the freedom and space to be themselves. As Jada worded it, “Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so.” They’re certainly not the typical Hollywood couple, but their bond seems to be quite strong.

John Galecki and Kaley Cuoco

Big Bang Theory stars John Galecki and Kaley Cuoco are one of TV’s most surprising couples, as they kept their relationship a secret for two years while filming. Kaley later spilled, “It was a wonderful relationship but we never spoke a word about it”. They didn’t want their budding romance to ruin the series, they also worried it would conflict with fans’ acceptance of Penny and Leonard on screen.

Although the relationship only lasted from 2007 to 2009, the couple succeeded in keeping the break-up professional, and even managed to maintain their friendship. Cuoco’s husband Ryan Sweeting, following the relationship with Galecki, was even a fan of the show.

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem met back in 1992 on set of a Spanish film Jamon Jamon. They finally reconnected in 2007 as an on-set couple again filming Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Penelope was only 16 when she first met Bardem, he recalls the chemistry between them 15 years before beginning an official relationship together.

Bardem explains that their chemistry can be seen when they’re on screen together and that she’ll be able to show her kids how they met and fell in love. This year, the successful couple has a few Oscar wins between them. We wonder if they display them all together, they’d probably need a big shelf!

Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millipied

Although Natalie Portman and her husband Benjamin Millipied didn’t meet as an on-screen couple, they did meet on set. Portman, a star known for valuing her private life, fell in love with Benjamin while he was her choreographer for her role as a ballerina in Black Swan. The film was notoriously difficult for Portman, as she lost significant weight, broke a rib, and had to deal with director Darren Aronofsky.

Having her love bloom with Millipied was a gift that gave Portman the will to push through and succeed, despite animosity with co-star Mila Kunis. Natalie honored their love in her 2011 Oscar speech, thanking her partner for helping her through the best role of her career.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are one of Hollywood’s most respected couples. They met on screen in 1983, but the couple saw no point in saying “I do”, and chose to remain unmarried even after over 35 years. Hawn shares her wisdom claiming, “In a healthy, longer-term relationship, I would say it’s great to be together about 68 percent of the time.”

Kurt and Goldie go as far back as 1966, first acting together in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, but only started dancing together and falling in love on the Swing Shift set. In an interview with Closer Weekly, Russell said his favorite thing about Goldie is that she’s still dancing for him today.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes

They’re parents to two daughters, Amanda and Esmerelda, and keep fame and family life so separate, that their daughters don’t even know their mom and dad are A-List celebs. Ryan and Eva met as colleagues on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines and slowly began going public as a couple.

One of their first sightings was at Ryan’s mom’s college graduation in Toronto. Mendes talked about falling in love and starting a family with Ryan, saying, “it made sense for me to have…not kids, but his kids. It was very specific to him.” In 2015, the couple got to co-star in Lost River as well, four years into their relationship.

Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy

Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy’s love story is one to remember. After meeting on the set of Evening in 2007, the talented actors took it slow, enjoying working together in the romantic setting of rural Rhode Island. After fighting her feelings for a while, Claire discovered Hugh’s knack for crafts and caved in. That would be the start of their 15-year relationship.

Even with the challenge of keeping love and family life strong, the couple has dealt with long-distance while Claire worked in North Carolina filming Homeland while Hugh worked on Hannibal in Toronto. Today, Danes and Dancy have two children together, Rowan and Cyrus. Claire claims, “It’s a huge asset to have a partnership with someone you trust and admire, and want to make out with.”

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder

Before costaring in Edward Scissorhands, former couple Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder first crossed paths at the premiere of Great Balls of Fire! way back in 1989. Depp proposed to Ryder only five months into the relationship, and told Rolling Stone Magazine, “I’m being really honest with you when I say that there’s been nothing ever throughout my 27 years that’s comparable to the feeling I have with Winona.”

Winona and Johnny broke up after four years, and Depp made light of the situation by changing his “Winona forever” tattoo, to “Wino forever”.  Winona took the break-up hard, being only 19 at the time. Looking back, both actors believe being so public about their love in their early days of fame was a part of what caused them to separate.

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield met during the first screen test for their roles in The Amazing Spider-Man. Garfield fell for Stone quickly, claiming “it was like I woke up when she came in, it was like diving into white-water rapids and having no desire to hang on to the side”. The two fell fast, and were spotted holding hands and kissing, though they avoided commenting on their relationship status.

While interviewing on the Ellen Show, Garfield told DeGeneres to “drop it” when she joked about their on-screen chemistry seeming so real. Despite breaking up in 2015, Stone and Garfield remain friendly. Andrew even shares, “It’s been bliss to be able to watch her success and watch her bloom into the actress she is”.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

After playing Ronnie and Will in The Last Song in 2009, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth publicly announced their relationship in 2012. Through multiple breakups and attempts to try again, Miley and Liam still feel thankful for their time together a decade later. Liam shared with Men’s Fitness Magazine, “I don’t think those feelings will ever change. And that’s good because that proves to me that it was real…

…It wasn’t just a fling. It really was an important part of my life and always will be”. Miley also has spoken about the relationship with respect for their journey, but acceptance to leave what could no longer work for her.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are one of Hollywood’s most iconic couples. Originally meeting as actors in Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2003, they both denied their relationship was “love at first sight”. At the time, Brad Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston, but filming together brought him closer to Angelina. She recalls, “Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened”.

The couple officially became public in 2007, claiming their passion for humanitarian aid and raising their 6 children together is what kept their love alive. After 12 years together, Angelina and Brad filed for divorce, bringing their famous love story to an end.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan

Step Up stars Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan met on set and began an unexpected 13-year relationship. Playing a couple who meet at a high school with Dewan as a dance student and Tatum as a troublemaker completing community service, it’s not surprising that they fell in love. The roles were perfect for a budding romance.

In 2018, Channing and Dewan split up and announced on Instagram “We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple. We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together….but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now”. Through their relationship, parenthood, and even their mature divorce, Tatum and Dewan are an inspiring Hollywood love story.

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling met as young Canadian stars in 2003, while filming The Notebook. In the early months of acting as Ally and Noah, the not-yet couple had a seriously hard time getting along. Ryan even asked director Nick Cassavetes to bring someone to replace her. As time went on, the romance between their characters turned their conflict into love.

In 2007, as rumors about a breakup spread, Gosling stayed silent when asked if he and Rachel were separating. After four years, this much-loved duo broke it off, leaving The Notebook fans equally heartbroken. Though Gosling claims the love between him and Rachel was more of a love story than the romance movie they co-starred in.

Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow

Before Brad Pitt left Jennifer Aniston and married Angelina Jolie, he first fell for Gwyneth Paltrow. Pitt and Paltrow met while filming Se7en and fell in love in the limelight for only a short time before “consciously uncoupling”.  Even after 25 years, and separate marriages and divorces, Brad and Gwyneth still have a lot of love for each other today.

In a recent interview with Brad for Gwenyth’s Goop blog, she jokes, “I finally found the Brad I was supposed to marry. It just took me 20 years”.  They also laugh about being a “very 90’s couple”, and reminisce about old photos of their Calvin Klein jean jacket and white t-shirt look.

Blake and Penn were caught kissing a year into their six seasons on set together. They enjoyed two years of dating and filming together before breaking up professionally.

Gossip Girl writer Joshua Safran says, “They kept it from everybody which is a testament to how good they are as actors.”. Although Blake is with Ryan Reynolds and Badgley is married to Domino Kirke today, the actors have managed to stay amicable over the years. It’s a testament to how Hollywood couples can remain friendly while working in the same industry.

Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn

Starring in The Break-Up with Vince Vaughn, the two played a complicated couple and found chemistry as more than just colleagues. Even after separating, Justin posted a happy birthday to Jen, writing “Happy birthday to this fierce woman. Fiercely loving, fiercely kind…and fiercely funny.”

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green

Megan and Brian managed another four years of marriage before going through with a divorce in 2020. Brian Austin Green shares, “Some people look at divorce or things not working as a disappointment, and it’s not. The fact that it worked at all is a positive. We have three amazing kids. We’ve had and we have a great relationship.”

Before making their romance official, they flooded the media with praise for one another. They bonded over a mutual appreciation of each other’s talents, and Aronofsky was impressed that she accepted the role in his psychological thriller so willingly.

After their breakup, both Lawrence and Aronofsky have mutual respect for each other. In an interview about the movie, Jennifer was asked less about the film and more about her and Darren’s “energy”. Jennifer shared, “I’ve been in relationships before where I am just confused,” she said. “And I’m never confused with him.”

Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana

In an interview with Marie Clare she said, “There’s a reason why you’re called an ex, I crossed you off my list. Moving on”. Still, Bradley and Zoe managed to end on good enough terms to work together on two Guardians of the Galaxy movies only two years after their breakup. Clearly, they were able to keep things professional!

But things were off to a rocky start, Billy Bob Thornton was engaged at the time and Angelina was newly divorced from her first husband Johnny Lee Miller. But those issues didn’t stop them from falling in love. Neither did their 20-year age difference.

Jolie and Thornton surprised the world, (especially Billy Bob’s fiancee Laura Dern) when they married in 2000, however they divorced as soon as 2002 after rumors of Billy Bob cheating on Angelina. Both stars admit the fling was taken too seriously too fast. Angelina later said, “I think one day we had just nothing in common. And it’s scary but… I think it can happen when you get involved and you don’t know yourself yet.”

essence

The couple’s love took a toll as Berry and Martinez wanted to raise their family in Europe, but joint custody with the father of Halle’s firstborn made it impossible. The relationship was a series of ups and downs, and “Bennifer” called off their wedding in 2003 over “too much media attention”. Their breakup followed just a few months later.
